General Social Networking Discussion - How to Use Effectively

This is a thread for those of us who haven't been using social networking or simply need to learn how to do it effectively.

For myself, I tried Twitter for a while and I have a personal Facebook account.  I'm terrible at updating either one.  How do you guys find the time to participate in the various sites?

Hi, Tina:

This is a GREAT group to start! I have a LOT of experience with online business and marketing forums. But I have very little experience with social sites other than membership sites (like TM) and Twitter.

I'm not on Facebook yet because when I started in Internet Marketing a couple of years ago, Facebook seemed more geared to non-commercial social networking — family and friends and community clubs, etc. I was focused exclusively on marketing and promotion.

Since then, two things have changed: first, the online marketers seemed to have moved into Facebook. And second, I have turned into a "social butterfly" in a few of the online business and marketing forums (and a few membership sites like TM).

I need to find time to start developing a true social networking plan of action to help develop my online business. I am sure discussion in theis group will encourage and inspire me! Smile

I signed up for FB for the reason it was intended. I go on there to keep up with friends, chat, post updates, gaming, etc. Marketing didn't cross my mind because that was not why I joined. But I did discover that you can make money on FB and market your sites. All you have to do is post your website address or links to new blog posts, etc.

For products, you can make pages or fan groups. Invite all your friends to join. If they like it, they will invite their friends and so on. So it can't be plain and boring like a general make money ebook. That woudln't get any members.

For example, you can make a fan group For Celebrity Doe and fans of Celebrity Joe will join. Invite your friends who are fans, they will invite their friends who are fans and so on. Then you can post links on the page to products by or about Celebrity Doe such as books, music, dvd's, whatever. Post a bio of the person and updates now and then. You will put links on the page where fans could purchase their products if they wanted. Or if you have a website about the person, point them there.

That's just an example.

I can't be of help with twitter, I haven't gotten on their in ages and don't regularly. In my experience it's just been mostly spamming.

Interesting Val.  The ONLy reason I got on FB was marketing.  Reading this thread is the first time I even thought of looking up my family or if any of them even uses it.  I did have a few people from my high school spot me and friend me just recently though.

I'm not sure how well FB would work for some niches - the the gem hunting field is a whole very different type of beast than other fields.  I've met rockhounds and gem dealers the world over. A few have joined my site and a few others will be joining me on a hunt this spring.  We will be looking for agates - well actually going to get them as three of us going know different locations where they are in that area.  And rockhounds all over the world know we're going.  It sure won't be hard to sell them.

And just for your viewing pleasure - these are what we are going to go get:

Wow, Sal - that is gorgeous!

I'm glad that I'm not the only one left behind in the social networking revolution...lol.  I only joined FB because my sister nagged me for six months.

I do know that I want to keep my personal life separate from the business aspects so I'm thinking of setting up FB and other social networking accounts in the business names I use, instead of my personal name.

It's easier to amass a following when you log in regularly.  When I started on Twitter (late to the party!), I think I had a dozen or so followers after a month or two.  But, I wasn't using it much at all.

When I started using it regularly, I rather quickly went from those few followers to several thousand.  Of course, that also involved getting over the hesitation to follow strangers.  I was like, should I follow this person when I don't even know them?  Once I got over that, getting followers was easier.

And, the more followers, the more interactive it becomes.  When you have a few followers, interactivity is down because people may not be on Twitter when you are.  When you have a greater number of followers, that increases the odds that someone will be on when you are.

I could post a question on my blog or a forum and, over the period of a couple days, get several answers.  I could do that on Twitter and have several answers within minutes.

I haven't been a heavy user of Twitter for a while and my following has suffered as a result.  It's still growing, but it's taken months to gain another 1,000 followers.

The thing is just to schedule Twitter time (which, admittedly, I've been lax to do lately) and make it part of your routine.  I used to go right to Twitter when I turned on the computer in the morning, and keep it open throughout the day.

I guess I need to join this group - I want to be able to talk the same speak as my kids! they laugh at me when they ask me how many friends I have on FB - I have grand total of 3. To be honest, I haven't a clue how these guys actually became me friends!

Not only that, but once I am in there, what can I do?

I even had some emails about vasrious people on here that have added me as a friend - but everytime I log on, I only have one . . .

So, my limited Social Networking experinece so far has been a VERY lonely experience to say the least. Cry

I am feeeling however, that I would like to do tweets as I have heard they are short and sweet (yup, I know a little info) kinda appeals to me Smile

Hi, Kevin:

We have a Twitter group going, too, that is separate from this Social Networking Discussion group. If you do have a Twitter ID, go and post it in the Twitter group. I'll add you to the list and hopefully other members will follow you, too.

(I'm not officially on Facebook yet. Like Tina, I want to keep the more "personal" stuff separate from my Internet business activity ... although, I am pretty open and free with the personal stuff on most of the business networking sites I am a member of! lol) Smile

Hey, everyone. What about StumbleUpon? Anybody still use that for Social Networking?

What are your favourite social sites, or the one(s) that get some kind of results for you? Smile

I haven't used StumbleUpon for a while.  I still have it installed in my browser--I just don't use it as much.

But, that's mainly because it's not in my main browser...
