It's easier to amass a following when you log in regularly. When I started on Twitter (late to the party!), I think I had a dozen or so followers after a month or two. But, I wasn't using it much at all.
When I started using it regularly, I rather quickly went from those few followers to several thousand. Of course, that also involved getting over the hesitation to follow strangers. I was like, should I follow this person when I don't even know them? Once I got over that, getting followers was easier.
And, the more followers, the more interactive it becomes. When you have a few followers, interactivity is down because people may not be on Twitter when you are. When you have a greater number of followers, that increases the odds that someone will be on when you are.
I could post a question on my blog or a forum and, over the period of a couple days, get several answers. I could do that on Twitter and have several answers within minutes.
I haven't been a heavy user of Twitter for a while and my following has suffered as a result. It's still growing, but it's taken months to gain another 1,000 followers.
The thing is just to schedule Twitter time (which, admittedly, I've been lax to do lately) and make it part of your routine. I used to go right to Twitter when I turned on the computer in the morning, and keep it open throughout the day.
