Options for Forums for Membership Sites

By forums, I mean the traditional forum-type websites.  As such, I am not going to include solutions such as Elgg on this list.  I'm thinking strictly discussion forums here.  Please feel free to jump in with your suggestions and I'll add them to the list.

While some are free, keep in mind that there may be licensing restrictions so be sure to check those out carefully.

OPTIONS

Roll Your Own - One option, if you have some coding experience, is to code your own.  This is a good solution if you don't need a full-featured package or if you need something very specific that existing packages can not do.

bbPress - From the developers of WordPress. Free.

Invision Power Board - Pricing starts at $9.99 for a hosted solution or $149.99 for a self-hosting license.

MyBB - Free.

Phorum - Free.

phpBB - Free.

Simple Machines - Free.  PHP/MySQL.

Vanilla - Free.

vBulletin - Pricing starts at $195.

I want to add a forum component to the membership site I'm developing but I haven't decided which platform to use. I'm leaning towards phpBB since I know a lot of people that use it. Hopefully, it will be adequate the way it is since I know nothing of coding...lol.

I've never used it, not from an admin perspective and not sure if I've used it as a user.

I think I looked at MyBB once.  I did an install of bbPress today.  That was easy.  Very much like WordPress, which makes sense since it's made by the same group.  I did a standalone installation and not one that's integrated with WordPress.

For my SciFi site, I'm rolling my own.  If I were to go with a third-party, I'd be inclined to go with vBulletin.

Actually, I did use MyBB in the past.  I used it on one site that I sold and on another site I still have but haven't done anything with in years.  Just remembered those sites a couple minutes ago and looked them up to see what I had used.

If I were going to be building a huge forum, I'd go for vBulletin. But it's too expensive for what I want it for and I don't think I need something so feature rich.

Thanks!  I've added it to the list.

Apparently, I even visited the site recently as the link was in my browser's "visited" color, but I don't remember it...
