By forums, I mean the traditional forum-type websites. As such, I am not going to include solutions such as Elgg on this list. I'm thinking strictly discussion forums here. Please feel free to jump in with your suggestions and I'll add them to the list. While some are free, keep in mind that there may be licensing restrictions so be sure to check those out carefully. OPTIONS Roll Your Own - One option, if you have some coding experience, is to code your own. This is a good solution if you don't need a full-featured package or if you need something very specific that existing packages can not do. bbPress - From the developers of WordPress. Free. Invision Power Board - Pricing starts at $9.99 for a hosted solution or $149.99 for a self-hosting license. MyBB - Free. Phorum - Free. phpBB - Free. Simple Machines - Free. PHP/MySQL. Vanilla - Free. vBulletin - Pricing starts at $195. |

If I were going to be building a huge forum, I'd go for vBulletin. But it's too expensive for what I want it for and I don't think I need something so feature rich. |
