Sean - this is a response to your wire posting about changing your mindset about viewing IM as a hobby rather than a job.
A hobby is something we do because we really get a kick out of doing it. Nobody is telling us to set the alarm to do our hobbies, nobody gives us deadlines or instructions on how to procede with them - we keep up with our hobbies simply because we love our hobbies. If we didn't, we wouldn't be doing them.
Work, on the other hand is something that has been drilled into our heads that is something we HAVE to do to keep a roof over our heads and food on the table, and if we master it well, a BMW in the garage. No matter what we reap from work, though, it's a pretty dead drill (aha, that's where that lyric came from, LOL) if we don't actually ENJOY what we are doing all those damned hours that we could be enjoying our favorite hobbies -- UNLESS..............
WE MAKE OUR HOBBIES OUR JOBS.
Wherever did the idea of our hobbies being different from our jobs come from? From hard working parents who had to mill through the 9 to 5 hash because nobody ever told them they could have fun working either? Hmmmmm.
I am a rockhound. There is nothing in this world I would ever consider more thrilling than finding an awesome gemstone. But......is it a hobby or a job? Lets consider the facets (oh just full of wit tonight, eh?).
I can make money taking people to places they can find awesome gemstones - tour guide.
I can make money writing guides about varied rock and gem locations.
I can make money selling rocks I find - raw for lapidary rough, sliced, sliced and polished, cabbed or faceted. I can stick them into settings and sell jewelry. I can slice them and make tabletops, wind chimes, "stained glass windows" other decorative ornaments.
I can sell equipment for hunting, or books to teach people about hunting or crafting.
I can plan events that will bring in money.
In other words......I can make my "work" my hobby. They do not have to be mutually exclusive.
You like IM? Look at all the things you know how to do. You love to build things with codes? Sell what you build. Are you a word master? Sell what you write? Are you a speed linker? Do linking for people. Stay away from what you hate to do or don't like to, want to, or know enough about to do. You can JV with someone to do what you don't want to do.
Once you make or do something that you really had fun doing and some money ends up in your bank account as a result, you will have a first hand whiff of the idea that making money can be fun - it can be a hobby that you never need to think of in relation to the term "work" - that dirty filthy disgusting unsavory idea "work".........instead of working, you will just be making money and we can all live with that idea.
So in answer to your question -- ditch the work, ditch the job -- keep the hobby and just learn how to make money from your hobby. Beats the hell out of having a "job" hands down.
