Can You Create Rapport Online?

If you've been involved with offline, "face-to-face" selling, then you're probably familiar with Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) or at least with some of it's techniques.

NLP is a collection of techniques that lie somewhere between psychology and self-help. It's very popular, mostly un-scientific and not everyone takes it seriously. Be that as it may, many of the most powerful sales-techniques derive from it.

As a sales-person, one of the most essential things you can do is to create rapport with your prospects. When you have rapport, you and your prospect feel like you're really on the same wave-length. Rapport is when you feel like you've known someone forever and can really trust them. There are many techniques that can be used to increase rapport, even with a complete stranger. However, they all involve some kind of interaction between two people. Can you recreate any of this online, when you never see your prospects?

I'd like to hear everyone's thoughts about this. How do you get your visitors to warm up to you online?

NLP has to do with the areas of the brain that deal with language hardwiring (yeah, it's an instinct).

If you deal with people the same online as you would if they were face to face with you, yes, you will gain a bit of rappore with your contacts.  But to build any presence of distinction, you have to have fire. You have to be memorable.   You have to have a habit, hobby, way, etc. that distinguishes you from every other sharp contact on the net.  Why you? Because ...................., fill it in yourself. The bottom line for IM is that you have to be able to network with the best in any chosen area of IM that you need to if you can't get that area.   It's always better doing business with those you know a bit and understand.  There is a lot of barter involved, but that is what networking is, why we should do that -- and in the "off business" times, networking always gives  you someone kewl to talk to when ya just want to toss ideas around.

Okay - back.  I'm on a borrowed computer until Clearwire figures out their jobs, so kinda cut that answer short.

Networking is actually how you build rappore online.  I have been called an "OTer" for years now in the WF.  That is true - I am an "OTer" -- but if that seems to be insignificant, look at my websites, look at the site here that I admin, talk to a rockhound anywhere and if they haven't heard of me and RHS1 yet - when you talk they will look that site up and put it on favorites bookmark.

I don't know code - couldn't do the tech end of anything in cyberspace, yet I get around. How?

Networking.  By getting to know the people who do know how and choosing the ones to JV with that I really enjoy working with and talking to - people with the skills I lack that can appreciate linking with me for the skills I have to bring to the table.   I started finding these people in the OT forum - where people talk about what is on their minds and how they feel about it.  Where I could learn what people stood for, what their value systems consisted of, their sense of humors (just try working with people with no sense of humor).   Just through everyday banter and chat, I learned who did what - who did it with integrity - and who was fun.

True networking starts no different than that trip to the cafe or bar in a new town.  You go, grab a beverage, and sit and talk to people.    By the time you build a website and have need of material for newsletters, you are in a position to build rappore with those in your field by dropping them a line and asking if you can print some news about their projects or if they could give you comments about an issue, for a live link and credits, etc - they are glad to tell what they know.  People love being experts at what they are into.  And suddenly your rappore shoots again, because you are integrating with the experts in the fields that surround you.  They will think highly of you and help to drive traffic to your site, especially when their own words of wisdom are to be found there.

It's not that difficult.
