A Sense of Values

By Joann Jones, Guideposts

(From the "Good Stuff" booklet published by Progressive Business Publications)

During my second year of nursing school our professor gave us a pop quiz. I breezed through the questions until I read the last one. "What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?"

Surely this was some kind of joke. I had seen the cleaning woman several times, but how would I know her name?

I handed in the paper, leaving the last question blank. Before the class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our grade.

"Absolutely," the professor said. "In your careers you will meet many people. All are significant. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say hello."

I've never forgotten that lesson. I also learned her name was Dorothy.

I have always been terrible remembering names but I've found that when I do manage it, the response is always excellent. I find that if I use a person's name several times when I meet them, it helps to impress it on me better. When I worked retail, people loved it when I greeted them by name and remembered details like how many kids they had and the like.

I tend to remember the details easier than the names, for some odd reason. But I noticed that even when I couldn't remember a name, just remembering details seems to make people feel special, instead of just another sale.

Hi, Tina. I think you hit on the key value right there: making people feel special or important.

Many of us have bad memories for names; most people realize that and are forgiving. But fail to give them the attention they deserve and that sticks with them. Or, do something to give them that little bit of extra attention, and that goes a long way in our favour! Smile
